Tarot at Fry's Electronics

Posting my story of intolerance and discrimination for your consideration.

My husband, John Cutliffe is an employee of Fry's Electronics in Duluth Georgia.  They are celebrating their 25th anniversary this week and as part of the celebration they've hired a variety of entertainers.  On the list of approved entertainers was "tarot reader".  John saw this a few weeks back and mentioned to management that his wife is a professional tarot reader.  They wanted me so the details were worked  out and I was contracted to be there yesterday afternoon for three hours.

I arrived more than an hour before I had agreed to start and began to set up.  There was a bit of discussion about whether I would be outside or inside.  I explained that because it was breezy and threatening to rain I did not want to read outdoors.  We compromised and found a shady, sheltered spot near the front door.  As soon as I started my first reading there was a sudden bit of activity and anxious looks between my husband and the organizers.

When I'd finished the reading my husband came over and explained that someone had called corporate and complained about Fry's hiring a tarot reader.  It seems they were offended based on their religious beliefs.  I was asked to move out to the edge of the parking lot or alternately to leave without pay.  We countered with an offer to move inside to a quiet video conference area away from traffic and that was refused.  Assistant store manager Adam Hale told my husband in no uncertain terms that if I did not move to the parking lot I would not be paid.

Other members of staff did the best they could to handle an unpleasant situation, however Mr. Hale was rude and inconsiderate.  Fry's could easily have explained to the complainers that I was hired as an entertainer and was harmless and easily avoided.   Instead they chose to persecute a person who was there in a professional capacity to do a contract job based on the complaints of a few religious bigots.

Today I am told that my husband has spent the day explaining to his friends at Fry's why his wife was "kicked out of the store" as if I were the one at fault.  Not one single word of apology or explanation has been spoken to him by management.

Edit:  Contact information for Fry's and many other corporations can be found at http://consumerist.com/ .  I am removing the emails I had posted as Fry's have contacted me and apologized and assured me this is not the way the company would have preferred to have handled the situation.

I appreciate everyone's efforts to make Fry's aware of the impact this had.  It was noticed!

Don't worry. I'll be flaming them all the way from Dallas, TX!!

you wouldn't believe how much trouble with frys that I've had just with other means... I know that it doesn't relate to this community but I was thrown out because of my GLBT pride necklace. Saying that it offended customers. If they'd get their head outta their said asses maybe I'd consider working or shopping there again. Until that happens? I'm not setting foot in that discrimination hell hole. It's what they do best, and they don't spot what is really wrong with the said computers when the wrong workers aren't there. They like to blow off disabled co-workers even if I knew what I was talking about and doing with the computers (I was working the computer service department- ya know where they fix the computers). And they just don't respect anyone who walks in to either shop or work the store in general.
Poor service.
Poor pay.
Over priced.
And I'm waiting for the day for the whole chain to go under.
Still peeved at them, and this happened a year ago... Still have yet find another job because of them.

Sorry I ramble. Something I've got a tendency of doing. -giggles-
Like I said though. I'll flame them from all three of the house hold computers. Just to get them good!! -cackles-
Seriously shutting up now. Sorry you had so much trouble with the bastards. -hugs-

One I went into a Fry's in my wheelchair & tried to buy a video game. They would not accept my state ID because it wasn't a valid drivers license. I think that it was shortly after my complaint that they changed that that stupid policy.

Was your agreement to work the event anywhere in writing, beforehand?

Yes, there was a verbal agreement between my husband and the manager who was responsible for setting up entertainment for the event but I also insisted on a fax to confirm before I took the day off from my regular job.

I've linked to your post in my LJ and I plan to let the company know my feelings about their nonsense!

Do you think they'll listen to someone who lives in a state where there are no Fry's stores? I live in Florida.

Well they do have internet sales and I assume you will tell your friends and family in other parts of the country how this incident made you feel about Fry's. :)

Sending prayers and energies for your voice to be heard. This is just outrageous. We don't have a Fry's near me. But I'm not a fan of the store.

They are a pretty typical corporate store with all of the usual retail goodness and badness. I don't hate the company by any means but I would like them to know this had an impact.

I live in Duluth and have had problems with that store before. They will be hearing from me about this, too. That is unacceptable behavior.

I have for the last several years gone to Fry's when I need something specific and still often just drop by on weekends to see what is new. However, I do not purchase from religious bigots or organizations that encourage religious bigotry.

I strongly suggest an apology be made for the insensitive and quite stupid behavior of Fry's management to the issue noted here: http://wildhunt.org/blog/2010/05/tarot-problems.html .

The owner of that blog is quite good about noting innacuracies and apologies.

And, as store staff often follow corporate behavior, I encourage that your corporate staff actually educate themselves a bit about non-Abrahamic religions and their cultures. You can do so, here: http://www.religioustolerance.org/
